Overview

What Does a Dental Assistant Do?

A dental assistant works chairside with dentists and helps patients through their treatment, from seating them to checkout.

The core of the job is chairside assisting during dental procedures: preparing and breaking down treatment rooms, passing instruments, keeping the working area clear with suction, and mixing materials for fillings, crowns and impressions.

Dental assistants also sterilize instruments, follow infection-control protocols, update patient records and help patients feel at ease in the chair.

Taking x-rays and other expanded duties are allowed only where state rules and the assistant's permits allow them.

Requirements vary by state, from on-the-job training to formal certification (e.g. the DANB CDA), making this a common entry point into a dental career.

Compensation

Dental Assistant Salary

Dental assistants earn a median of $48,070 a year, or about $23 an hour for full-time work, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (OEWS, SOC 31-9091, May 2025).

The middle half of dental assistants earn $44,340 to $58,090, and the top 10% earn more than $62,250.

Pay moves with location, setting and credentials, so use the salary filter at the top of the page to narrow listings by pay, then compare local figures in dental assistant hourly pay by metro and see how CDA certification and EFDA credentials relate to pay.

Benefits

What Benefits Do Dental Assistants Get?

Benefits vary by employer, so treat each dental assistant job posting as its own offer and check what it lists before you apply.

The benefits worth comparing include health insurance, dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) plan and whether the employer matches it, paid time off (PTO), and paid training or continuing education (CE).

Training support matters for dental assistants because x-ray and expanded-function permits in many states require a course or exam, so ask whether the employer will invest in that training.

Use the Benefits filter at the top of the page to show listings that mention a benefit, such as Health Insurance, Dental & Vision, 401k Match, PTO / Paid Time Off, Training Provided or Continuing Education Budget.

Benefit tags are drawn from what each posting lists, so a missing tag doesn't mean a benefit isn't offered.

Confirm the full package with the employer before you accept.

Duties & Credentials

Chairside Duties, Credentials and State Rules

Every dental assistant job includes basic chairside assisting, but which dental procedures you may perform yourself is set by your state's dental board, not by the employer.

Taking x-rays, coronal polishing, placing sealants, taking impressions and placing restorations are regulated duties.

Depending on the state, they may need a radiology permit, a course, a state registration or an expanded-function credential, and some states don't allow certain duties at all.

That's why postings often ask for letters like RDA (registered dental assistant), CDA or EFDA (expanded-function dental assistant).

These are credentials, not separate jobs: RDA and EFDA are state titles, while CDA can mean the national DANB Certified Dental Assistant or a state title that uses the same letters.

CDA vs. RDA explains the credentials, what a dental assistant can't do covers the duties reserved for dentists and hygienists, and dental assistant requirements by state covers each state's rules.

Duties and requirements vary by state and change over time, so verify the current rules with your state dental board before you apply or take on a new duty.

This is general information, not legal or medical advice.

Employers

Who's Hiring Dental Assistants

Dental assistant positions here come from dental employers of every size: single-dentist general practices, multi-office groups, and dental support organizations (DSOs) that run many locations.

Specialty practices hire dental assistants too, and the chairside work changes with the specialty. The orthodontic assistant and oral surgery assistant guides cover two of them.

Each listing shows whether the role is full-time, part-time or contract.

Read the schedule in the posting, including the days per week, the hours and whether evenings or Saturdays are part of the role, before you apply.

Browsing is free.

Open any listing to read the full posting, then use Apply to go to the employer's own posting and follow its hiring steps.

Career

Growing Your Dental Assistant Career

Many dental assistants start with on-the-job training, and experience requirements are set by each employer and stated in the posting. Dental assistant jobs with no experience covers how beginners get hired.

Adding a credential, such as an x-ray permit, the DANB CDA or a state expanded-function permit, can widen the opportunities you qualify for, because some postings require one.

Dental assisting also leads to other careers in the practice. Some assistants move into treatment coordinator or office manager roles, and others go back to school and move into dental hygienist jobs.

The dental assistant career guide explains the role in depth, including how assistants support patients' oral health alongside the rest of the care team.

FAQ

Dental Assistant Jobs FAQ

01Are there dental assistant jobs near me?

The openings change daily as practices post new dental assistant jobs and fill others, so the live count is shown at the top of this page rather than as a fixed figure.

To find dental assistant jobs near you, type your city or state into the Location filter, or choose a location under Dental Assistant Jobs by Location.

Each location page lists only the openings in that area, and you can sort the results by newest or by salary.

02Do dental assistant jobs pay hourly or a salary?

Each posting shows pay the way its employer sets it, which may be an hourly rate or an annual salary. To compare the two, the BLS national median of $48,070 a year works out to about $23 an hour for full-time work (OEWS, SOC 31-9091, May 2025). Hourly pay on a part-time schedule adds up to less over a year, even at the same rate. See dental assistant hourly pay by metro for local figures.

03How do I apply for dental assistant jobs on DentistryHires?

Browsing dental assistant jobs is free.

Open a listing to read the duties, schedule, pay and requirements, then select Apply, which takes you to the employer's own posting or application.

Each dental practice runs its own hiring process, so follow the steps in its posting, and check that you hold any credential or permit the listing asks for before you apply.

04Are dental assistants in demand?

BLS projects dental assistant employment to grow 7.4% from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3.5% for all occupations, with about 53,000 openings a year (Employment Projections 2025–35, SOC 31-9091).

BLS counts openings from both new jobs and the need to replace assistants who move into other occupations or leave the labor force.
