Endodontist Job Description Template
Copy it, edit the bracketed parts, and lead with the three lines that make it an endodontist posting: referrals, equipment and the credential you actually require.
An endodontist job description should say five things a general-dentist template misses: the endodontic case mix you are handing over and where its referrals come from, the equipment in the operatory, the exact credential — an active state dental license plus completion of an endodontics residency — the schedule, and a pay range with the benefits attached.
Board certification is voluntary, so require it only if you mean to filter on it.

What to include
Endodontics is one of the 12 dental specialties the ADA's National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards recognized as of October 22, 2026, defined around the morphology, biology, physiology, pathology and regeneration of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues.
A posting that reads like a general-dentist ad with the title swapped tells a specialist nothing about the case mix, the equipment or the referrals — make it recognizably endodontic from the first line.
Lead with the referral situation.
An established base of referring general dentists you are handing over, a shared column alongside an existing doctor, and a market the hire is expected to help build are three different jobs, and a candidate cannot tell which one you are offering unless the posting says.
Saying it plainly is an advantage, not a disclosure.
Name the setting with the same directness — it is the other half of the referral answer.
In ADA Health Policy Institute's 2024 data, 26.9% of endodontists practiced solo (one location, one dentist), 16.6% were in groups with 100+ locations, and 20.8% were affiliated with a dental support organization.
Solo practice, single-location group and DSO specialty platform are all legitimate offers — state which one you are.
Then describe the clinical reality concretely:
- Case mix — routine root canal therapy, how much retreatment, whether surgical cases such as apicoectomy stay with you, and the patient base the referrals bring.
- Equipment — the operating microscope, CBCT and whatever else is in the operatory. Listing it saves both sides a phone call.
- Duties — diagnosis and treatment planning for pulp and periradicular disease, root canal therapy and retreatment, periradicular surgery where you offer it, use of the microscope and CBCT where equipped, and referral-relationship management: reporting outcomes back to the general dentist who entrusted you with their patient.
- Support — trained endodontic assistants, sterilization coverage, and who owns the referral line day to day. Describe the support structure around the chair in the same detail as the equipment.
State the credential precisely: an active [STATE] dental license plus completion of an advanced education program in endodontics.
That combination — not "DDS/DMD required" — is what distinguishes the specialist.
Board certification is voluntary, so add it only if you actually intend to filter on it; the field uses three distinct credential terms, and the template below shows how to write the one you mean.
If the role includes handling controlled substances, say so and require an active DEA registration for your location — DEA registration is location-specific and does not carry across states, which matters for multi-site and multi-state roles.
Give the schedule shape and a real pay line: days per week, hours, how appointment blocks are built, and a quoted range with the benefits attached rather than "competitive salary."
Close with an equal-opportunity line and one obvious way to apply.
This page is the role template.
For the craft that applies to any dental ad — structure, length, what repels candidates — our guide to writing a dental job ad covers it, and the full process from screening to offer is in how to hire an endodontist.
The worker-side view of the specialty lives in our endodontist career guide.

The referral line, the equipment line and the credential line are the three that make it an endodontist posting rather than a general-dentist ad with the title swapped.

The credential line is where a general-dentist template does the most damage, because the specialty's terms are precise and each describes a different candidate.
Per the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards: board certified — completed dental school and an advanced education residency program, passed the board certification examination, and keeps up continuing education to stay certified; board eligible — the same education, eligible to sit the board exam, has not passed it; educationally qualified — the same education plus a state dental license, without certification.
Write the one you mean.
The certifying body for this specialty is the American Board of Endodontics, one of the 11 certifying boards on the National Commission's recognized list as of October 22, 2026.
If you are open to internationally trained applicants, one detail is worth knowing before you write the line: since October 19, 2022, the ABE has accepted internationally trained endodontists for board certification only through a CODA- or CDAC-approved advanced standing pathway.
Start the requirement line from your own state's license and terminology.
In Connecticut, no one may practice dentistry without a license from the Department of Public Health (Connecticut General Statutes § 20-106).
The Kansas Dental Board recognizes specialist certificates in branches including endodontics, separate from the general dental license.
The New Jersey State Board of Dentistry issues ADA-recognized specialty permits alongside its sedation and local anesthesia permits.
In Illinois, dental licenses are issued by the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, whose dental professions page lists Specialty in Dentistry among the license types.
And Mississippi's licensee search filters by license types that include Dental - Specialty.
Because the vocabulary differs by state, check your state dental board's own license types and mirror its wording in the requirement line — and confirm with the board or your employment counsel before you require a specialty credential your state handles differently.
If your endodontist will dispense controlled substances, DEA registration is location-bound: a separate registration is required for each principal place of business or professional practice where controlled substances are dispensed (21 CFR 1301.12(a)), a practitioner practicing in more than one state must hold a separate registration in each state, and a registration based on one state's license cannot authorize dispensing in another.
For a single-location role that is one line in the posting; for a multi-site or multi-state role, say which locations the role covers.
On pay, the two public series are useful and neither is quotable as-is.
BLS's May 2025 wage data for offices of dentists pools this specialty in its Dentists, All Other Specialists category — endodontists, periodontists, oral pathologists and other specialists not listed separately — with a median of $224,990 and a middle 50% of $159,530 to $389,520.
ADA HPI publishes the endodontist-specific figure, but it is median net income for private-practice endodontists — a private-practice net-income figure, not a wage — and the latest published figure is $279,040, for 2021; the 2022–2025 cells are suppressed.
Quote a range from your own market and label the structure, and you are giving candidates more useful information than either series can.
One don't: do not copy a standard percentage-of-collections split, daily minimum or lab-fee arrangement out of a template.
Our research found no published source for typical figures, so any such number circulating in templates is unattributed.
Decide the structure you will run and state that one.
Schedule and benefits close the description.
Say the days, the hours and whether the role covers more than one location, and list the benefits block concretely — health coverage, PTO, a CE allowance, malpractice coverage, retirement — rather than comprehensive benefits.
Name chair time, appointment structure and support staffing together, so the schedule line tells a candidate what a working day looks like.
After you post
Verify before the first shift: the license with your state dental board, the specialty certificate or permit where your state issues one, and DEA registration for this location if the role includes controlled substances.
Keep copies in the hire file.
Have the real numbers ready: how many referring practices send consistently, what is in the operatory, and what you are handing over on day one.
Keep the description on file after you post it.
Federal disability-rights law treats a written job description prepared before advertising or interviewing applicants as evidence of the job's essential functions — one more reason the requirement line should say what you actually mean before it goes live.
General employer information, not legal, tax or clinical advice — confirm licensing and permitting specifics with your state dental board.
