How to Verify a Dental License in South Dakota Before You Hire
The South Dakota State Board of Dentistry's online verification, the registrations and permits to confirm, and what to keep on file.
In South Dakota, one lookup covers the clinical team's licenses and registrations: the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry's online verification covers dentists, dental hygienists, registered dental assistants and dental radiographers, and the board calls it primary source verification.
Records are flagged when there is disciplinary action, and sedation and assistant permits are a separate confirmation with the board.
Here is what to search, which registration matters for each role, and how to document the check.
Rules vary by state and change
This guide explains federal rules and the state rules it names, as of the date above.
Employment law and dental-practice rules differ by state and are revised often, so confirm current requirements with your state dental board, labor agency or employment counsel before you act on them.
It is general information, not legal advice.
Who licenses dental professionals in South Dakota
For the clinical team, the credentials this page covers come from one place: the South Dakota State Board of Dentistry.
Its online verification is a single database of dentists, dental hygienists, registered dental assistants and dental radiographers licensed or registered in South Dakota, so a dentist, hygienist, RDA or radiographer hire is checked through the same portal.
Two things make that lookup strong evidence.
The board states that the site is its primary source verification โ you are checking against the issuing board rather than a photocopy of a wallet card โ and it says the license and registration information on the website comes directly from the board's own licensee and registrants' database.
Where each credential stands:
| Credential | What you verify in South Dakota |
|---|---|
| Dentist license | The board's online verification |
| Sedation or host permit (dentist) | A separate board permit โ confirm with the board |
| Dental hygienist license | The same online verification |
| Registered dental assistant (RDA) | The same online verification |
| Dental radiographer registration (x-rays) | The same online verification |
| Assistant sedation-monitoring permit | A separate board permit โ confirm with the board |
New to the workflow?
Start with how to verify a dental license for the general process, then apply the South Dakota specifics below.
Looking up a dentist's license
Run the candidate through the board's online verification before you rely on a rรฉsumรฉ.
You can search by a full or partial first or last name, or by license or registration number โ a number is the cleaner search, since a partial name can return several people.
Read the record you land on and note two things.
The information comes straight from the board's licensee database, and if there is disciplinary action on the record, it will be flagged โ a flag is your signal to get details from the board before you move forward.
Sedation is the separate check for a dentist.
A South Dakota dentist who wants to administer nitrous oxide sedation and analgesia must hold a nitrous oxide sedation and analgesia permit, one who administers moderate sedation must hold a moderate sedation permit, and a dentist who wants to use the services of a licensed anesthesia provider must hold a host permit.
Sedation and host permits require a facility inspection, and temporary permits of up to 12 months may issue after an inspection.
Ask which permit your candidate holds and confirm it with the board โ our research could not confirm that the online verification displays permits, so treat the board as the authority.
Earning the license is a different question: dentist licensure requirements in South Dakota covers that side.
Hygienist licenses and permits
Hygienists are in the same database as dentists, so the check is the same motion: search by name or license or registration number and read the record that comes back, including any disciplinary flag.
Verify every hygienist you hire, even a familiar part-timer โ the search is quick and the dated result is what your file needs.
Credentials beyond the license are the part to handle directly.
Our research could not confirm that the South Dakota verification displays separate hygiene permits, so if a candidate represents a credential beyond the license, ask for the documentation and confirm it with the board rather than assuming the online record lists it.
What a hygienist must hold to work in the state is on our guide to dental hygienist requirements in South Dakota.
Dental assistant registrations, certificates and permits
Registered dental assistants and dental radiographers are both searchable in the board's verification, so you can check an assistant's registration the same way you check a license.
Match the registration to the duties you are hiring for:
- X-rays. Any dental assistant who takes x-rays in a dental office must be registered by the board as a dental radiographer, and those registrations are searchable in the verification. If the job includes radiographs, the radiographer registration is the record to confirm.
- Expanded functions. An assistant who is not registered with the board as a registered dental assistant (RDA) may not perform expanded functions โ so if you are hiring for expanded duties, verify the RDA registration in the lookup rather than taking a certificate at face value.
- Sedation monitoring. An assistant who monitors patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation or moderate sedation must have a board permit. Whether that permit shows in the online verification was not confirmed, so ask for it and confirm it with the board.
The full scope picture โ which duties attach to which credential โ is on our guide to dental assistant requirements in South Dakota.
Discipline history and other states
The verification flags discipline: if there is disciplinary action on a licensee's or registrant's record, the record will be flagged.
When you see a flag, contact the board for the underlying details before you decide, and ask the candidate their side.
Discipline also surfaces at the National Practitioner Data Bank: state dental boards must report to the NPDB any action based on professional competence or conduct that revokes, suspends or restricts a dentist's license, censures, reprimands or places a dentist on probation, or accepts a license surrender โ and boards of dentistry count as NPDB reporters.
That means a license action taken in another state can follow a dentist to South Dakota.
Querying is limited to eligible entities, so the practical route is the candidate's self-query, which the practitioner may share with whomever they choose.
Our guide to NPDB queries covers who can query and how.
Out-of-state credentials end at the state line: our research found no national dental license lookup in dentistry, so if your candidate holds a license in another state, verify it with that state's own board.
Run the rest of your screening alongside the license check, OIG exclusion checks included: someone excluded by HHS-OIG can receive no payment from federal health care programs for items or services they furnish, order or prescribe, and those programs include Medicaid and CHIP, so a practice that bills them is covered.
Documenting the check
Save what you saw, the day you saw it: a dated screenshot of each verification result, and of any disciplinary flag you find.
Keep the lookup to hiring checks, because the board authorizes its online data for verification โ it disclaims any warranty of accuracy and does not authorize other uses of the data.
If a result looks off, contact the board before you act on it.
When you need the board's own formal record instead of a screenshot, the board mails a written verification of license or registration status: complete its request form and submit it with the appropriate fee, and a letter goes to the party you indicate.
The fee amount is not stated on the board's verification-request page, so confirm it with the board office before you send the request.
Re-run the search for current staff periodically too โ the check is cheapest before a problem, not after.
And once the check clears, the next document to think about is the offer itself โ our guide to non-competes in South Dakota covers what a practice there can and cannot put in one.
Before the first patient
- Search the board's online verification by full or partial name, or by license or registration number, and save a dated screenshot of each result you rely on.
- Search every licensed and registered hire: dentists, hygienists, registered dental assistants and dental radiographers all sit in the same database.
- Treat any disciplinary flag as a prompt to get details from the board before you act on the hire.
- If the dentist will use sedation or a licensed anesthesia provider, ask which permit they hold โ nitrous oxide, moderate sedation or host โ and confirm it with the board.
- For assistants: check the radiographer registration if they take x-rays and the RDA registration for expanded functions; confirm a sedation-monitoring permit with the board.
- Ask for an NPDB self-query, and verify any out-of-state license with that state's own board.
- Keep the lookup to verification uses, as the board requires, and re-run the search for current staff.
Questions employers ask
Is the South Dakota board's online verification primary source verification?
Yes.
The board states that its online license verification is primary source verification, and that the license and registration information on its website comes directly from the board's licensee and registrants' database.
If an organization asks for a written verification instead of your screenshot, the board mails a letter of license or registration status on request with its form and a fee.
Does the South Dakota lookup show sedation permits?
The board requires a nitrous oxide sedation and analgesia permit to administer nitrous oxide sedation and analgesia, a moderate sedation permit to administer moderate sedation, and a host permit to use the services of a licensed anesthesia provider, and sedation and host permits require a facility inspection โ temporary permits of up to 12 months may issue after a facility inspection.
Whether those permits display in the online verification was not confirmed, so ask which permit the dentist holds and confirm it with the board.
What does a disciplinary flag on a South Dakota verification mean?
The board says that if there is disciplinary action, the record will be flagged.
Treat the flag as a signal to look closer, not a verdict: contact the board for the details of the action before you move the hire forward.
State dental boards also report actions on a dentist's license, such as revocations, suspensions, reprimands and probations, to the NPDB, so a dentist's discipline can surface there as well.
Do dental assistants need to be verified separately in South Dakota?
The registration to check depends on the duties.
Any assistant who takes x-rays in a dental office must be registered as a dental radiographer; an assistant who is not registered as a registered dental assistant (RDA) may not perform expanded functions; and an assistant who monitors patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation or moderate sedation needs a board permit.
Radiographer and RDA registrations are searchable in the board's verification; confirm the monitoring permit with the board.
How do I get a written license verification from South Dakota?
Complete the board's request form and submit it with the appropriate fee.
The board mails a letter verifying the license or registration status to the party you indicate.
The fee amount is not stated on the board's verification-request page, so confirm it with the board office before you send the request.
