Public-sector hygiene jobs pay below the private-practice median on paper, but how far below depends on the setting.
In BLS OEWS May 2025 data, dental hygienists earned a median of $81,940 in the federal executive branch, $72,800 in state government and $84,020 in local government, versus $98,280 in offices of dentists, while outpatient care centers paid $94,880.
Federal loan repayment helps too: the NHSC offers hygienists up to $50,000 for a two-year commitment, and the IHS runs a parallel program covered below.
Here is each setting, with the numbers.
The short answer, by setting
You came for one number per setting, so the table comes first.
Every figure is the median annual wage for dental hygienists (SOC 29-1292) in BLS OEWS May 2025, the current release, published May 15, 2026.
| Setting | Hygienist median, BLS OEWS May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Offices of dentists (the private-practice baseline) | $98,280 |
| All hygienists, all settings | $98,100 ($47.16/hour) |
| Outpatient care centers (the industry that includes community health centers) | $94,880 |
| General hospitals | $92,760 |
| Offices of physicians | $91,160 |
| Local government | $84,020 |
| Federal executive branch | $81,940 ($39.40/hour; 910 jobs) |
| State government | $72,800 |
Three reading notes.
These are straight-time gross pay: production bonuses and commissions are included, but overtime, non-production bonuses, profit-sharing and the value of benefits are not.
They cover wage-and-salary workers, so self-employed hygienists and owners in unincorporated practices are outside the figures.
And no BLS series this page cites is called "public health," "VA," "military" or "prisons" β the industries and government sectors below are the proxies this page uses, labelled as such throughout.
For the market you'd be stepping out of, employers posting hygienist jobs on DentistryHires posted a median of $52.50 an hour as of October 6, 2026, across 1,124 employers and 2,044 listings stating hourly pay; the middle half ran $46.00 to $57.50, and 85.1% of hygienist listings stated pay.
That's advertised pay, not earnings, but it sits above the $47.16 hourly median BLS reports for all hygienists.
The full national picture, including state medians, lives on our dental hygienist salary page.

What these numbers don't tell you
Federal GS/VA pay for hygienists
Our sources give no VA-specific hygienist pay table β what they give is the General Schedule behind the federal Dental Hygiene Series (0682), plus the BLS figure for federal hygienists overall.
Under OPM's qualification standard for that series, clinical dental hygienists enter at GS-5 with either a four-year bachelor's degree in dental hygiene or one year of experience as a licensed hygienist.
GS-6, GS-7 and GS-8 each require one year of experience at the next lower grade.
The 2026 General Schedule base table, effective January 2026 and before locality pay: GS-4 step 1 is $31,103, GS-5 $34,799, GS-6 $38,791, GS-7 $43,106, GS-8 $47,738 and GS-9 $52,727.
Most federal employees also receive locality pay, which lifts actual pay above the base table.
The published reality for people already in these jobs: BLS put the median for the 910 dental hygienists in the federal executive branch at $81,940 a year, or $39.40 an hour, in May 2025.
Step increases, higher grades and locality pay all stack on top of that base table, which is why the grade and step in a federal announcement β not the base chart β is your real answer for any federal vacancy.
Dentists in the same public-sector settings are on a different pay track β see public health dentist pay for those numbers.
Where federal hygiene jobs are posted, and how the applications work, is the job of our government dental hygienist jobs guide.
FQHC and community clinic pay, plus NHSC loan repayment
No primary source we pulled gives an FQHC hygienist wage: HRSA's Uniform Data System doesn't publish salaries.
The closest published number is BLS's outpatient care centers industry β the category that includes community health centers β where hygienists earned a median of $94,880 in May 2025.
Treat that as an industry proxy, not an FQHC wage.
What clinics lack in published wages, loan repayment partly makes up.
The NHSC Loan Repayment Program covers dental hygienists: for 2026 it offers up to $50,000 for two years of full-time service, or up to $25,000 for two years half-time, at an NHSC-approved site β and private-practice sites can't use the half-time option.
The $75,000 award you'll see quoted in NHSC material is for primary-care medical providers; dentists and hygienists are in the up-to-$50,000 group.
Two add-ons can move the total.
For 2026, NHSC adds a one-time $5,000 Spanish-language enhancement, taking the maximum to $55,000 full-time ($30,000 half-time) for providers who qualify.
And after the initial two-year contract, participants may apply for one-year continuation contracts to pay down remaining loans.
The Indian Health Service runs a parallel program: the IHS Loan Repayment Program repays up to $50,000 of eligible health profession education loans for an initial two-year commitment at facilities serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities, extendable annually.
As with NHSC, we have no published IHS hygienist pay range to cite β the federal and outpatient figures above are the honest proxies.
The fine print β who qualifies, what counts as an approved site, how the application cycle works β is its own topic: see NHSC loan repayment for hygienists for the full walkthrough.
Community settings are also where state practice rules matter most; our direct access hygiene guide covers what hygienists can do in each state without a dentist on site.
Military hygienists: enlisted vs civilian
"Military dental hygienist" can mean two different jobs with two different pay systems: an enlisted service member β enlisted military dental hygienists exist in the Navy, which lists them under Navy Enlisted Classification L35A β or a civilian federal employee hired on the General Schedule, the route covered in the section above.
On the Navy's enlisted side, dental assistants are hospital corpsmen (HM) with NEC L33A, and the Navy lists separate NECs for dental hygienists (L35A) and dental laboratory technicians (L36A basic, L37A advanced).
For scale, the 2026 enlisted basic pay table, effective January 1, 2026, pays $2,836.80 a month at E-3 with two years or less of service, $3,142.20 at E-4 and $3,342.90 at E-5.
That's base pay only, and no source in our research pins which grade an enlisted hygienist holds β so treat those figures as the shape of the enlisted pay system, not a hygienist salary.
The civilian federal route pays per the GS table above, and the $81,940 federal executive branch median is the closest published figure for federal civilian hygienists.

Correctional facility hygiene jobs
Start with the honest answer: no primary source we fetched publishes a correctional hygienist wage β not for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and not for state or county systems.
Dollar figures quoted anywhere other than a live posting aren't from the sources this page cites, so weigh them with caution.
The labelled proxies are the government-sector medians from the table above: $81,940 in the federal executive branch (the Federal Bureau of Prisons is a federal executive agency), $72,800 in state government (state correctional systems) and $84,020 in local government (county jails are local government).
Each is a sector median for all hygienists in that sector, not a corrections wage.
For a specific posting, the posting itself is the best source: read the grade and step on a federal announcement, or the salary range on a state or county posting, and compare it against the sector medians above.
Confirm the license requirements with the state dental board where the facility sits.
This page is general career information based on the sources cited, not financial, legal or tax advice β confirm current figures with the hiring agency, OPM or HRSA before making a decision.
